2025 Lift Every Vote Atlanta

The qualifying period for candidates for the City of Atlanta’s 2025 municipal elections will be August 19-22, 2025. 

Mayor

As the City’s Executive Officer, the Mayor has the power to execute and enforce provisions of the City’s charter, exercise supervision over the administration of all City departments, veto decisions of the City Council, and submit to City Council the recommended annual budget. The mayoral election is non-partisan — candidates don’t run as members of a particular political party. The Mayor serves a 4-year term and is limited to 2 consecutive terms.

City Council President

All of Atlanta votes for City Council President. The City Council President break tie votes of the City Council, appoint committee chairs, and step in should anything happen to the Mayor - until a new Mayor is elected. 

Current City Council President, Doug Shipman will not seek re-election, leaving an open seat up for election on November 4, 2025.

City Council

All 15 Atlanta City Council Seats (Including 12 District Representatives and 3 At-Large Members are up for election.  

While all Atlanta residents can vote for the At-Large seats, each voter can only vote for the District Representative in the the District they reside in.

Municipal Judge

The Municipal Court of Atlanta consists of nine judges who conduct bench trials — which do not include juries–concerning matters such as traffic offenses, driving under the influence, ordinance violations, certain misdemeanors, and code enforcement violations committed within City limits.

Municipal Court judges are appointed by the Mayor and are on the ballot every four years for “retention.” Voters do not get to pick who they want to judges, but they do get the opportunity to remove existing judges.

School Board

Four Atlanta Board of Education seats- Districts 2, 4, 6 and Seat 8-At Large are up for election on November 4, 2025. 

The Atlanta Board of Education establishes and approves the policies that govern the Atlanta Public Schools. The Board consists of nine members, representing six geographical districts and three “at-large” seats. Members serve a 4-year term.

Public Service Commission

Two Public Service Commission Seats - Districts 2 & 3 are up for election on November 4, 2025. The entire state of Georgia votes in this statewide election. 

The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) regulates electric, gas, telecommunications, and intrastate transportation companies. Its five elected commissioners set utility rates and decide who pays for infrastructure projects and cleanup costs — customers or utility companies. If an electric utility company wants to build more plants, it must get PSC approval. The PSC does not regulate water, cellular service, or broadbrand internet.

The primary election for the PSC was held on June 17, 2025. Because no candidate won more than 50% of the total vote for the Democratic candidate for PSC Seat 3, there will be a runoff on July 15, 2025.
